River Island’s Autumn/Winter collection this year has already been controversial – and it’s not even in stores yet! You can read Melanie from Fashion Editor at Large’s instigating article here, that claims bloggers have perpetuated a look which is all about throwing on tonnes of statement pieces and that ‘now it’s all about being high maintenance, blatant and unashamedly fashion mad’. I’m not going to go into the debate – you can read responses to Melanie’s article here and here – as to be honest I’m not fussed enough to care. So I’ll just get on with telling you about River Island’s AW12 collection shall I?! 😉

The trends we’ll be seeing from River Island this winter are:

Downtown – ‘Boy dressing meets Punk’. Lots of oversized swagger coats and geometric prints, it was all very Jessie J. I love the modern twists on traditional fabrics and tailoring, and the jackets are phenomenal. They’re rather outrageous so they need to be tempered with simple styling or you’re going to look like an 80s music video has vomited all over you!

Blogger – ‘Organized chaos’. Fun mixes of colour and prints with crazy statement pieces. This trend has a really eclectic feel that can be toned up or down depending on your taste. There were some cool printed trousers and fur pieces that I’ll be keeping my eye out for.

Prim – ‘Quintessentially ladylike’. We’ve been seeing more ladylike silhouettes and shapes coming in this summer, especially with all the slim ankle strap heels and peplum, so I expected this. My own personal style is a little more boyish and grungy, but these pieces are perfect to add some elegance into the mix. There were some gorgeous pastel knits too that I’m sure you’ll all love.

Scandi – ‘Vikings and Warrior Princesses’. Animal motifs, tartan, furs and checks galore, with a dark colour palette perfect for moodier winter weather. This trend has a tonne of beautiful outerwear pieces.

Baroque – ‘Lavish and powerful’. Although there’s meant to be two sides to this trend – a more formal Eastern Baroque and the casual Urban Baroque – the whole thing seemed pretty OTT to me. Lots of opulent detailing, fabrics and accessories. Although it was all a bit garish for my liking, I really liked the leather pieces.

Futuristic Goth – ‘Medieval era … meets 90s grunge look’. This was one of my favourite trends despite the weird name. It was a real mix of hard and soft textures and silhouettes, with girly pieces toughened up with gothic details. Some great dresses and skirts that you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

Which trend do you like the sound of most?

So happy to see this post! I haven’t actually seen any good images of the press day. Totally agree on putting the debate to the side – let’s look at the CLOTHES!

That biker jacket with leather sleeves looks AMAZING. I love the mix of textures. That finger the wrist ring action piece is also incredible. From the way you’ve described it I love the sound of the blogger trend – it’s totally the way I like to dress. Doh. As a blogger who would have guessed?

p.s. the jumper in the last photo looks gorgeous too! xx
